With race day approaching. Some of you may be thinking what do I need. If it is your first race then apart from obvious things like your skates you will also need a helmet. It would be a good idea to bring some safety pins to keep your number on. We have some at the desk but if you bring your own then you will definately have enough.
While on the subject of race numbers, we are trying out some new material this year. We don't know how well they will hold together. Should be better than some pf the previous ones. If you want to ensure your race number is visible and doesn't tear off we recommend bringing some tape along to put on the back of your number and that will prevent it from tearing.
Cramp, dehydration and heat stroke/exhaustion risks
Heat exhaustion can happen when you deplete your bodies reserves of salt, water and blood glucose. Early symptoms are feeling light headed/dizzy a headache, and shivers when you know you should be warm. If you get it early then it is completely avoidable. Ignore it and you can suffer for a few days with vomitting and diarrhoea and some very nasty symptoms.
If it is warm then you should bring plenty of liquids for before and after the race. We will be providing water bottles for skating while racing and selling refreshments to others. However, we would recommend you bring your own electrolyte and/or recovery drink for optimum performance. You should know what works best with your body.
Cramp can be a factor when you sweat a lot too so if you have a low salt diet you might want to top up a bit before and after the race.
